Creating Substrates with Sculptural Relief for Mosaic

using coloured mortar and modern andemento

January 20th and 21st, 10am-5pm

$325 + gst (includes materials)

Students will create their own abstract 3D relief on an already prepared mesh/mortar substrate by building areas of the substrate using mesh/mortar/styrofoam. Erin will help guide participants with the mosaic-ability of their relief portions with demos and individual help. (A mesh/mortar substrate making demo will be included in the course but there is not time to make their own). We will go over the specific challenges that can happen with a 3D substrates.

 

Students will learning how to properly mix and work with tinted mortar. Erin will also cover some modern andamento that students can apply to their works.

The sculpting portion- Students may wish to bring tools for spreading (such as palette knives, spatulas, and/or other more refined mosaic spreaders/spatulas). Erin will bring extras. Students should bring an apron.

 

For the mosaic portion: students will need nippers and anything else they like to use for mosaic,  must have *tweezers*.
